Not long times ago at the end of 19th century the territory of opera house considered to be the further north border of City of Yerevan and from there use to begin the ancient cemetery of Kozern and at the exact place of nowadays academic theatre use to be the small chapel of Gethsemane. The territory was considered to be a part of Shahar block of Yerevan. It is considered that earlier there use to be a small one dome church like the church Holly Mother of God XI-XIII cc. which was destroyed from earthquake in 1679s. At the end of the century on the same place the chapel of Gethsemane was built. The chapel was destroyed during the construction works of the opera house, which, however, should have got the second breath by the decision of architect Alexander Tamanian. The stones of the chapel were kept on the purpose to rebuild the chapel on a suitable place. However, at the end of the construction of Opera House, it turned out that most of the stones of the chapel were not exist. At the left side of the opera house hall entrance a cross tone has been erected in 2007 in memory of. By the way, the academic theatre named after Alexander Spendaryan only in 1938s and awarded with the academic title in 1957s.
The Opera House and its territory are not only the symbol of Yerevan but the symbol of unity and independence of Armenian nation.
